Context

Matchmaking, a kind of utilitarian marriage folk custom traditionally, is often viewed as the mixture of "free love" and "arranged marriage" in the contemporary Chinese context. Although matchmaking has gradually evolved into a way of free spouse selection with the cultural modernization, the utilitarian nature of traditional matchmaking including relying on intermediary or family network to meet still exist.

Research Question 1

How does various elements contribute to the proceeding choice for matchmaking?

Target Audience
Who is the main user

With the acceleration of modern life and advancements in media technology, matchmaking is no longer merely a passive arrangement dictated by parental orders. Instead, it has become an active choice for urban youth seeking to establish intimate relationships. In the context of contemporary society, transitioning from “strangers” to “intimate relationships” has become exceedingly challenging. The quickened pace of life and scarcity of leisure time have driven individuals seeking matchmaking to pursue more efficient platforms. Consequently, the format of matchmaking has evolved from one-on-one and group matchmaking to the “assembly line” style facilitated by the internet.

User Research
Users' goals and Frustrations are identified
We kicked off this project by conducting surveys with people who ever took matchmaking events.

The interviews focused on gathering key information and helping us understand the trigger and obstacle during matchmaking events. The surveys ends up with 102 inputs from different age groups.

Pain Point
in current matchmaking event

According to the surverys, we realized that most of people are afraid of matchmaking becuase of appearnace anxiety or appearance stereotype when they first meet each other. Meanwhile, the historical context of matchmaking makes the youth feel awkwardness and embarrassness. The environment usually force two strangers to express themselves unnaturally, leaving illusory feelings to each other.
