This project honors the Precursors, the first Black undergraduates to attend The University of Texas at Austin, and other under-represented communities by commissioning a new monument on the East Mall.

The 50s were a time of intense racial conflict in Texas and nationally. Protests against school integration were ongoing. UT began admitting Black undergraduates after the Supreme Court decision to desegregate US Public Education. The first official cohort of Black students started undergraduate classes in the Fall of 1956 and are now referred to as Precursors.

The Precursors Project, also called the East Mall Project, give me the chance to work closely with the UT organization (CCI) and an external design agency MASS, to honor the first Black undergraduate to attend UT.
